Search Engine Optimization Tip #1

June 21, 2006

by Heather at OMSH

So, you’ve done your keyword research, you’ve written quality, keyword dense content, you’ve optimized your images, you’ve found your niche, you offer a quality product and/or service and maybe you’re even moving up in the search engines. GREAT! But let me ask you … Is that ALL you’re doing?

Whether your site is successful or not, you - and so many others - are making one BIG MISTAKE. What is that? The #1 mistake we see in search engine optimization is counting on search engines ALONE to promote your products, services, and yes, success.

YES, you want your site optimized.

YES, it is important.

NO, it shouldn’t be the sole focus of your search engine optimization efforts.

Think Outside of The Box

Consider venturing outside of the ‘box’ - and by that, we mean (Are you ready for this?) GET OFF the COMPUTER! Off-line promotion can be one of your greatest strides toward online ranking. Start by creating and distributing high quality business cards or pamphlets outlining your services. Price newspaper ads or your local yellow pages.

Does your community have local television, radio, or a college campus? If so, consider a public service announcement and don’t let them forget to give your ‘www’ address. Write a press release or have one written, sponsor a soccer team and you’ll be on the back of a t-shirt for a full season and beyond, get a car magnet or sticker for your family vehicles, wear t-shirts, sweatshirts or ballcaps with your company name and url. Spray paint your city’s water tower … or, you know, DON’T.

PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE

Yes, PROMOTE in the real world around you. You are the only exposure that people in your community may get to your online business - don’t forget to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX and reach those potential clients with your goods and/or services!

Believe it or not, real life advertising can add up to online hits. And most likely those hits have a higher sale conversion than your typical search engine hit. More unique hits also give your site more ‘weight’ and can directly effect your search engine ranking. So, let me say it again … when it comes to search engine optimization, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
